The Borrowed Tuesday
A man wakes up on a Tuesday, but his calendar says Monday. His wife smiles a smile that feels like a photograph. A red car sits in the driveway, though he has always driven a blue one. When he checks his phone, the photos show a man who looks like him—but with different clothes and a dog he has never seen. As he asks questions, the answers grow stranger. What is real, and what has been borrowed?
I woke up on a Tuesday, but my calendar said Monday. The smell of burnt toast filled the kitchen, yet I had never liked toast. When I looked in the mirror, a stranger’s eyes stared back at me.
My wife, Clara, was drinking coffee at the table. She smiled and said, "You're finally awake, darling." But her smile felt wrong, like a photograph of a smile. I asked her what day it was. She laughed and replied, "It's Tuesday, of course. You must have had a bad dream."
I walked to the window and saw a red car in the driveway. I had always driven a blue one. When I mentioned this, Clara's face turned pale for a second. Then she said the blue car was sold last year. I had no memory of selling it.
A strange thought entered my mind: maybe I was not the real me. Perhaps my memories had been replaced. I decided to check my phone. The photos showed a man who looked like me, but his clothes were different. In one picture, he was holding a dog I had never seen.
"Who is that dog?" I asked. Clara dropped her cup. It broke on the floor. "You're not supposed to remember that," she whispered. "They said the memory wipe would be complete."
"Who are 'they'?" I demanded. She looked at me with both fear and pity. "The company that made you," she said. "You are a replacement. The original you died in an accident. They grew a new body and copied his memories. But something went wrong. You still have pieces of the old life."
I felt cold. My whole life was a copy. My love for Clara was programmed. My job, my friends—all borrowed. I wanted to scream, but I couldn't. Then I noticed a small scar on my left hand. It was shaped like a star. I had seen that scar in a photo of the original man.
"I am not him," I said quietly. "But I have his scar. So I have his hands. Maybe I can choose what to do with them."
Clara reached for me, but I stepped back. I picked up a piece of the broken cup and put it in my pocket. It was sharp and real. I would keep it as proof that I could feel pain. Then I walked out the door, into a Tuesday that belonged to no one.

❓ FAQ
He woke up on a Tuesday, but...'
- 文章中'had never liked'和'had always driven'是什么语法?
- 注意'real'和'true'的区别:'real'强调真实存在(a real piece of cup),'true'强调正确或忠实(a true story)。另外'replace'(替换)和'replacement'(替代品/替代者)词性不同,文中'my memories had been replaced'是动词被动式,'You are a replacement'是名词。
