The Faded Dart

The old innkeeper found the dart under the floorboards. It was small, made of iron, and its tip was dark with old blood. He turned it in his hands and felt a cold shiver. This dart belonged to the Black Crane, a killer who vanished twenty years ago. Everyone thought he was dead. But this dart looked fresh, as if someone had placed it there recently.

Lian, a young guard, heard the story from the innkeeper. She took the dart and examined it carefully. The carving on the handle was unusual: a small lotus flower. She remembered that her father had taught her to recognize such marks. He had been a famous detective before he died. She decided to investigate the old case.

The next day, Lian visited the old prison records. She found a file about the Black Crane. The case was closed because the killer had fallen from a cliff. But there was no body. The judge had accepted the word of one witness: a merchant named Wei. Lian felt a spark of doubt. Why did Wei speak so confidently?

She went to Wei's shop. The merchant was old now, but his eyes were sharp. When she showed him the dart, his face turned pale. He said, "I have not seen this in years. Where did you find it?" Lian told him about the inn. Wei laughed nervously. "That inn was the place where the killer used to hide. But I am surprised you found a dart there."

Lian noticed that Wei's hand shook as he poured tea. She asked, "Why did you say the Black Crane fell from the cliff?" Wei paused. Then he said, "Because I saw him fall. I was there." But his voice was not steady. Lian felt that he was hiding something.

That night, Lian returned to the inn. She searched the room again. Under a loose brick, she found a small diary. The pages were yellow, but the writing was clear. It belonged to the Black Crane. The last entry said: "Wei is not my enemy. He is my brother. I cannot kill him. I will disappear."

Lian sat down, stunned. The killer was not a monster. He was a man who chose to vanish to protect his brother. The case was not about justice. It was about family. She closed the diary and wondered: should she tell the truth? The old case was closed, but the truth could hurt Wei's family. She looked at the dart again. Sometimes, the past is better left buried. But then she thought of her father, who always said, "Truth is a river; it always finds a way." She put the diary in her bag and walked out into the rain.
